safe cleaning tips

mildew can be killed with nontoxic, all natural substances like vinegar. Flag this photo
Mold and mildew are commonly found anywhere that maintains a high concentration of moisture for extended periods. Basements, bathrooms, kitchens and outdoor storage are frequent hosts to mold and mildew. Plumbing- or roof-leak locations are also areas to find mold and mildew.
Mold and MildewMold and mildew are microorganisms akin to fungi. They feed on moisture and damp conditions. Mold is everywhere, both indoors and out. Some molds perform very important functions, but indoor mold typically is more harmful than beneficial. Though the negative health effects of mold are far from settled, researchers recognize that mold and mildew, and the spores produced by them, cause problems for allergy sufferers and people with asthma.
VinegarVinegar is one of the natural biocides used to kill bacteria and microorganisms, along with salt and citrus oil. Vinegar, as purchased on the store shelf, is a diluted version of acetic acid at a 5 percent concentration. According to Gina Marino, the microbiologist for Good Housekeeping magazine, vinegar reduces mold by 90 percent and has a 99.9 percent kill rate on bacteria. It is safe to drink and its strong smell disappears after it has dried. It works on porous surfaces such as grout, as well as on nonporous surfaces.
FunctionUsing vinegar to clean mold or mildew is very simple. Wipe a cloth wet with undiluted white vinegar straight from the bottle over surfaces or spray them with the same vinegar and leave it to soak in before wiping with a clean cloth. It is important to use a clean cloth both before and after cleaning moldy areas so that the mold does not spread. However, vinegar or any other mold killer will not keep mold away unless the long-term damp conditions that caused the mold or mildew to occur are corrected.
ConsiderationsVinegar can also be used to clean mold off heavy-duty leather goods such as horse tack. Wiping the tack down with a cloth soaked in white vinegar mixed with water and letting it dry thoroughly out in the open removes and kills the mold and mildew. A follow-up with a leather conditioner that contains a mold inhibitor will return the tack's suppleness.
MisconceptionsVinegar is an effective natural mold and mildew killer, but chlorine bleach is one of the most commonly used agents. However, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recommends against bleach because it is only effective in killing surface mold, and does not affect the root system of the organism. This means that the mold will keep coming back. Chlorine bleach is very harsh, especially when used in tight spaces, and the fumes can exacerbate the problems of asthma and allergy sufferers. It causes respiratory and eye irritations even in those without asthma and allergies. Chlorine bleach that is not

RPC Lesson Plan
Improving the Quality of Life: A Senior Citizen’s Approach

Introduction
Narrative: I woke up this morning to the sound of a rooster crowing. I then raced to the bathroom. After fifteen minutes I rushed to the kitchen table. Upon sitting in my chair, I was served breakfast. The breakfast was two over easy eggs and four strips of bacon. Also served to me was a large glass of whole milk. My white bread toast was there too. It was covered with thick butter. After gulping it down I raced out the door. Somewhere in this rush I had thrown on my clothes. I was wearing a black tie, white shirt, black pants and polished shoes.
I opened the front door and ran to my car. I was proud of my hand washed car. My 1959 Chevrolet Biscayne reflected the bright sunlight. I drove quickly to work.
Upon arriving at Sears Roebuck, I reported for work. I picked up my cash drawer. I pressed the no sale key on my mechanical cash register. The drawer popped open with a bell sound. I was ready to start work.
I then heard a beeping sound. I realized then, fifty years had gone by since then.
Fifty years had gone by and there were many changes in my life. I then realized how I had adapted to this change. These changes could be good or bad. My quality of life depended on my choices. Let us discuss our choices to improve the quality of our life now.
The quality of life depends upon how we unify body, mind and soul.
So let us review how we woke up this morning. Including our schedule and our thoughts for today.

Body: The world has really changed. By adapting to the changes in our life, we can improve the quality of it.
Note: This is a group discussion about changes in diet, exercise, technology and our perspective of life.
Note 2: The audience will be involved. The audience as a group will relate how they cope with these changes.

Summary: Our quality of life can be improved by coping with change. How do we do this?

We can observe and learn how these changes can affect us in improving our lifestyle.

If you think about disaster, you will get it. Brood about death and you hasten your demise. Think positively and masterfully, with confidence and faith, and life becomes more secure, more fraught with action, richer in achievement and experience.

FOOD ...Kale Seniors need good food. GOOD FOOD, GOOD Mood!

Kale Nutrition Facts

Here are some great reasons to include Kale in your regular diet:
Kale provides an excellent source of vitamins B6 and C, carotenes, and manganese.
It is also a very good source of vitamins B1, B2, and E, fiber, iron, copper, and
calcium.

Kale has almost three times as much calcium as phosphorus. This is a beneficial ratio
because high phosphorus consumption has been linked to osteoporosis since it
reduces the utilization and promotes the excretion of calcium. Kale and collard greens
exhibit the same anticancer properties as other members of the cabbage family.

Your Daily Recipe!
Kale with Tofu- Simple and Delicious!

INGREDIENTS:
1 block of cubed extra firm tofu
6 large kale leaves chopped to bite size

PREPARATION

1) Fry tofu until golden brown and crispy using olive oil, red pepper flakes, and garlic powder.

2) After frying tofu, remove from pan, add more olive oil, and cook kale until soft and welted.

3) Add additional spices: salt, pepper, and garlic. Mix tofu and kale and serve hot.

He couldn't concentrate.

Through humor, you can soften some of the worst blows that life delivers. And once you find laughter, no matter how painful your situation might be, you can survive it.

Food Tonatoes Good food, Good mood!

Sweet Tomato Nutrition Facts

Lycopene is well known as a preventer of prostate cancer, which makes tomatoes high on the healthy food list for men.

Lycopene is not just important for men though. It is a powerful antioxidant and as such helps to protect the cells in our bodies from damage.

More facts about tomatoes? The vitamin B6, niacin, potassium and folate found in abundance in tomatoes are potent protectors against heart disease.

Niacin can lower high cholesterol levels and potassium has been shown to lower high blood pressure and to reduce the risk of heart disease.

Vitamin B6 and folate also work to convert the homocysteine in our bodies into harmless molecules. High levels of homocysteine are associated with an increased risk of heart attack and stroke.

The fiber in tomatoes also helps lower cholesterol levels, helps prevent colon cancer and helps to keep blood sugars at a low level.

Tomatoes are a source of riboflavin which has been shown to be helpful for migraine sufferers by reducing the frequency of their headaches.

The facts about tomatoes definitely point to this fruit/vegetable as a nutrient powerhouse and a super food to be enjoyed as often as possible.

Your Daily Recipe!

REMEMBERING A WONDERFUL DOCTOR-Today is the unforgettable birthday of my favorite otolaryngologist (a doctor dealing w/ disorders of the ear, nose, and throat). This post is dedicated to him. I met him because I had hearing problem. In the late 80's and on the early 90's, I experienced a decade of devastating, progressive, and profound bilateral hearing loss. This was the most challenging experience I had in life. But thank God, I live in an advance world of technology where it's still possible for a deafened artist like me to go back to the world of sound. On February 27,1997 I had a successful cochlear implant surgery at the UCLA Medical Center in Westwood, California.
WHAT IS A COCHLEAR IMPLANT? It is a miniaturized computer device that helps hearing impaired people like me to hear environmental sounds and understand the spoken words. Cochlear implant is not like magic. I didn't get my hearing back overnight. It took months of rehab and practice to decipher the mechanical sounds from my cochlear implant. Today I am a happy recipient of the cochlear implant technology. I am forever grateful to my ear surgeon, Dr. Jim who gave me the chance to recover 80% of my hearing.

Comment….I have posted this not as an ad. This personal experience may help those that are interested in hearing loss technology….. LLOYD THE DECON

A Date to Remember

virtuous woman? For her price is far above rubies.”-Proverbs 31:10
Every year there is one special day put aside for mothers. What else could it be called but “Mother’s Day.” On this day we remember our mother who mattered to us and have also affected us in some profound, meaningful & permanent way. Do not worry ...

Don't Worry
At age 20 we worry about what others think of us;
At age 40 we don't care what they think of us;
At age 60 we realize that no one is looking at us.
So the key is what we think of ourselves
So be happy You are the greatest

We are to be Respected and vailable

1970, when the United Presbyterian church informed 65 year-old Maggie Kuhn that she would have to retire from her executive position, she was suprised and unprepared. But, instead of bemoaning her fate, she proceeded to do what she'd done all her life: changed the rules. She and some older friends who were nearing retirement age organized.

They discovered common bonds with younger people during the turmoil of the Vietnam War. They forged an intergenerational organization they called "The Consultation of Older and Younger Adults for Social Change". Their motto: "Age and Youth in Action". At the suggestion of a television producer, Maggie decided that her group's name should be changed to the "Gray Panthers". Adoption of this name, according to Maggie Kuhn's biography "No Stone Unturned", "gave us a sense of urgency and, after all, we did want to create a stir".

Shortly after the Gray Panthers was formed at a national level, Oak Park native, Lillian Rosinger, heard Maggie Kuhn speak on a television talk show. Lillian was impressed with Maggie's intergenerational philosophy and her involvement with youth protesting the Vietnam war. Early in 1978, after working 25 years as a secretary, Lillian decided to take an early retirement so she could devote more time to social issues.

Administrative History
The Gray Panthers is an intergenerational advocacy group of citizens who are concerned with and active in improving the social conditions for everyone. They were founded in 1970 by a group of six women who were forced into early retirement. One of the most active cofounders of the organization, Margaret E. Kuhn, participated in picket lines and protests up until just days before her death in April of 1995. Some of the group's main objectives include the equal treatment of all people regardless of age, influencing social policies, and providing structure for grassroots populations to facilitate social change at a community level. The group emphasizes the problems of the elderly because social injustices affect them particularly hard. During the 1970s and 1980s some of the main issues that the group focused on were affordable housing for senior citizens and universal health care.
Initially called the Consolation of Older Adults, the group adopted the name Gray Panthers in 1972. They went on to secure non-profit status in 1974 and were instrumental in the establishment of several other non-profit organizations including the National Caucus of the Black Aged and the National Citizens' Coalition for Nursing Home Reform. They also worked closely with other groups including the Coalition for a National Health Service, Progressive Alliance, National Senior Citizens Law Center, and the Older Women's League. The Gray Panthers implemented their goals with varied techniques such as massive education programs, petition drives, consciousness-raising
